Maria Shriver Takes On Alzheimer’s Advocacy

Thanks to Ms. Magazine for featuring an excerpt from my recent interview with Anita Hill in which she shares her perspective on the sexism and racism Kamala Harris faces and what we could do to address it, plus her thoughts on what it would mean for the U.S. to elect its first woman and woman of color president, where we are in terms of the status of women today, and more. Very proud of Jazmin for her role in organizing yet another inspiring Hudson Valley Votes event Friday night featuring our fantastic local elected officials and amplifying the call to get-out-the-vote. Special treat to get to see Natalie Merchant who co-produced the event and performed several stirring songs alongside other stellar artists like Abena Koomson-Davis, Kate Pierson, Amy Helm and the Resistance Revival Chorus. My favorite performance from last night was "Put a Woman in Charge" (slide to see small clips). The event was also a fundraiser for @ppgnyact.

Lotus also helped out, passing out materials from @18byvote and interviewing young voters. Very energizing night as a reminder of not just top of the ticket, but the importance of our local elections, particularly this year, and all that is at stake in this election! (also to vote yes Proposition 1 in New York to support the ERA which offers protections against discrimination based on identity and reproductive rights.)

Lotus did such an amazing job at this Climate Week reading of "The Animals` Lawsuit Against Humanity" in NYC in partnership with a great organization called the @earthlawcenter. The play, based on a 1,000 year old story, follows a group of animals who take humans to court for their poor treatment, and explores interfaith environmentalism and the animal rights movement, and alludes to the work of Earth Law Center and the broader Rights of Nature movement in ingraining the rights of animals and other natural entities into law. The message of the play really resonates with Lotus and aligns with her children`s book series, @bearsforcares. You can find out more about the event and Earth Law Center at earthlawcenter.org.

Right now is a historic moment for our country with the opportunity to elect Kamala Harris as the first Black woman and first South Asian American person as President. As someone who has written a lot about the unique challenges female candidates face, and wrote the book What Will It Take to Make a Woman President?, I encourage us all to have her back, amplify fair media coverage, and do what we all can to support her during this pivotal election.
